Monster Rally! Probably one of the best (if not the best) bands to surface from the whole “gooey-syrupy-surfy-nostalgic-psychedelic-sample-based-instrumentals-with-the-vintage-cutout-collage-album-artwork” BandCampsphere. This is their second LP, which comes to us via our East Bay amigos Gold Robot Records. I hope these tracks fall into the right hands, because it would be awesome to hear someone rap over them. Fuzzy, poppy and fun, with lots of surf, psychedelic, bossa nova, highlife and calypso samples. They’re all great, but very short, so play a couple.

FCC CLEAN

RIYL: Golf Swingers, The Avalanches, Madlib, Pill Wonder

1. Lush and chipper, heavy emphasis on the woodwinds. A few chipmunk vocal samples at the end. 2. Deep bassline and a fluttering synth line. Pretty mellow. *3. Minor-key xylophones with a slow plodding beat. Mysterious. *4. Old movie western with slide guitar and a waltzy feel. *5. High-energy and dancy with prominent bongos and strummy guitar. *6. Midtempo, perfect movie credits outro music with that million-dollar keyboard roll (see: OutKast’s “Roses”) nostalgia factor set on HIGH. 7. Chipper calypso. 8. Funky organ and drums. *9. Chimes and crazy percussion. Definite standout. 10. Slow and foreboding with subtle vocal samples. 11. Vintage children’s cartoons played over Rangers-esq synth washes. 12. Skippy bassline and chopped up synth samples. 13. Loud, full drums with ringing instrumentation and rewind/fastforward effects *14. Staticy with a jivey breakbeat and some great tinkle piano. 15. Cool and austere xylophone. 16. Chopped and screwed ballroom dance. 17. Romantic orchestral swells and subtle instrumentation. 18. Deep sea western—cheesy slide guitar, muted horns and aquatic effects.
