IAN CAREY QUINTET + 1: Roads & Codes
Kabocha, 2013

MODERN JAZZ – Excellent, very thoughtful set from a Bay Area trumpeter leading a simpatico sextet. The ensemble passages are richly layered, the solos flowing and yearning. There’s an overall feeling of calmness, but spiced with a few vigorous surges and a lot of motion just under the surface. Really fine work from these local musicians.

Ian Carey : trumpet, flugelhorn
Evan Francis : flute, tenor sax
Kasey Knudsen : alto sax
Adam Shulman : piano
Fred Randolph : bass
Jon Arkin : drums

All tracks good! Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8

1. 11:37 – steady, gentle urban pulse: mostly lyrical solos, with subtle layers
2. 8:24 – daydreamy drag with flugelhorn, turns hard-edged, then swift
3. 7:10 – relaxed, mysterious, echoing horn break (from Neil Young film score)
4. 7:48 – snappy postbop: rolling solos lead up to a saxophone conversation
5. 9:58 – lovely, gently spinning waltz: breezy solo flights over lush harmony
6. 3:25 – vibrant hopscotch through Coltrane chords, busy trumpet, drum solo
7. 2:21 – Stravinsky theme, cool-toned and serene, leads into #8
8. 9:25 – laid-back vibe, an interesting pastiche of bluesy and cerebral
9. 3:44 – Charles Ives piece: solemnly marches into abstraction, then fanfare
