CHARLES LLOYD & JASON MORAN: Hagar’s Song
ECM, 2013
MODERN JAZZ – Fabulous hushed duets between sax master Lloyd, who just reached his 75th birthday, and pianist Moran, who has been a magical force in Lloyd’s quartet over the past few years. Most of the disc comes from other composers, with material ranging from Ellington and Gershwin to Bob Dylan and Brian Wilson. But tracks 7-11 are an original suite inspired by the harrowing slavery story of Lloyd’s own great-great grandmother. The vibe between Lloyd and Moran is relaxed and highly creative, the interplay very deep.
All good! Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 4, 5, 12
1. 4:52 – slow, romantic: softly fluttering sax and dignified piano
2. 5:18 – easygoing but playful classic: saloon piano, bluesy sax
3. 3:39 – serene: sweet intimacy, gentle and loving as a whisper
4. 4:21 – another gorgeous ballad, with tender sax & fragile piano
5. 4:00 – free-ranging improvisation: alto sax meanders, piano rumbles
6. 4:51 – classic ballad, slow and plaintive, shimmers like a jewel
7. 6:21 – low flute and rolling/stumbling piano, some tambourine
8. 9:46 – starts out quiet, spacious, aching, but twists into tight knots
9. 2:30 – mysterious flute against tense piano/tambourine, goes right into #10
10. 4:18 – stern, jabbing march; sax roams free while piano grumbles
11. 5:44 – oddly lilting sax melody, gradually shifts to deep, flowing piano
12. 4:42 – old standard becomes abstract: busy sax, piano strides & skips
13. 5:12 – slow Dylan tune with a gospel touch, straightforward and moving
14. 3:31 – Brian Wilson tune: very delicate and spare, with many pauses
