Beethoven intended his first published Opus (1795), three piano trios, including the Piano Trio in E-flat, Op. 1, No. 1, to show that he had mastered this form, made popular by Haydn and beloved by aristocratic amateurs. Its four-mvmt form became almost the norm for piano trios, Haydn having adhered to three mvmts. The Triple Concerto (begun in 1803) might be described as a piano trio with orchestral accompaniment. It was intended for the Archduke Rudolph of Austria, son of the Emperor Leopold II, who had begun to study with Beethoven. Thus, the piano part, for the Archduke, is suited to a pianist of modest attainments. The cello is mostly in high register to allow it to penetrate the orchestral sound. The melodies are short to allow them to be passed between the players.

1. Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Piano in C Major, Op. 56 “Triple”: I. Allegro 17:38. At first severe, then comes a serene 2nd theme, a marching theme, a warm development section, and lyrical cadenza leading to a brilliant coda.
2. Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Piano in C Major, Op. 56 “Triple”: II. Largo 5:09. A soaring melody is developed.
3. Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Piano in C Major, Op. 56 “Triple”: III. Rondo alla polacca 13:08. Brilliant, polonaise rhythm, with a triumphant ending.
4. Trio in E-flat Major, Op. 1, No. 1: I. Allegro 10:02. Elegant, decisive, spirited.
5. Trio in E-flat Major, Op. 1, No. 1: II. Adagio cantabile 8:08. Lyrical, with magical modulations.
6. Trio in E-flat Major, Op. 1, No. 1: III. Scherzo: Allegro assai 4:51. Lively.
7. Trio in E-flat Major, Op. 1, No. 1: IV. Finale: Presto 7:21. Ebullient, bravura style.
