FREE JAZZ Electric guitarist Reg Schwager and drummer Michel Lambert join up with three different guests for three sets of three trios each. The music is completely improvised.
All instrumental. No FCC issues.
With Misha Mengelberg on piano
1 Mid-tempo. Shimmering, spacey, formless. Sort of a pleasant, lazy feel. (5:55)
3 Fast. Jagged & scattered. A bit dark. Never finds a groove. (4:34)
9 * Very slow. A likeable dialog between piano & guitar. Much more empathy between the players on this one. Restrained drums accompany. (6:21)
With Kenny Wheeler on trumpet
2 Very slow. Elegiac melody on trumpet; very subdued guitar and drums. (5:16)
5 ** Fast. Lively melody on trumpet; snappy, syncopated drumming; and Reg lays down a funky bass part on electric guitar. Good piece. (5:09)
7 ** Tempo varies from slow to very fast. All three players improvise freely and have strong parts. Best of all, it works great together. (5:40)
With Michael Stuart on sax (all 3 are more melodic, less avant-garde than the other sets)
4 Very fast. Three parts: the opening with legato squawks & honks; a lively bebop middle section; a slower lyrical ending. Good if you’d like a shorter piece. (2:30)
6 Very slow. Smoky, breathy ballad. (4:34)
8 ** Mid-fast. Sax plays a varied & interesting lead. Guitar chords serve essentially like a piano. Drums are steady but restrained. (7:36)
