GILAD HEKSELMAN: This Just In
Jazz Village, 2013

MODERN JAZZ – Cool-toned and forward-thinking music from Israeli guitarist Hekselman leading an ace trio (plus tenor sax on 3,9,13). Hekselman’s bright, ringing tone has an overall calmness, but he can take off too (see #3). It’s an interesting contrast with the slippery, mercurial drive of his rhythm section. Good stuff.

Note: The eight main tunes are separated by very brief improvised interludes.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 9

1. 7:38 – relaxed, floating: guitar solo meanders and takes flight
3. 8:11 – detached melody at first, guitar solo gets rockin’, then sax digs in
5. 4:18 – a mysterious, moody flow with some electronic accents
7. 7:04 – melancholy guitar is buoyed by a steady, strolling rhythm
9. 7:59 – sneaky little tune: furtive guitar & sax contrast with rolling drums
10. 5:03 – unexpected cover of an ‘80s pop hit: slippery guitar & rhythm
12. 5:51 – simple melodic fragment develops & grows, guitar daydreams
13. 1:54 – brash start with electronics, then a brooding pulse
