AVANT-JAZZ – An intriguing trio of cello/tenor guitar (with lots of effects), bass & drums, very difficult to pin down. They can be raucous or folksy, neo-classical or psych… all in the same tune. Fred Lonberg-Holm goes all over the place while the rhythm players keep up solid grooves and a steady propulsive drive. Absolutely worth a listen.

Try any track. Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 6

1. 4:00 – rolling uptempo: crunchy cello grinds against circular groove
2. 5:01 – dark, kind of bluesy: guitar levitates and gets spacey, relaxed rhythm
3. 8:58 – drone, then uptempo folksy lope, good groove, stretchy cello rocks it
4. 8:29 – relaxed strolling rhythm, but guitar gets complex & glitchy, cello saws
5. 7:35 – brisk, almost catchy drive: guitar grooves, cello goes totally abstract
6. 6:58 – dark Asian sound; cello/guitar weave through the dense rhythms
7. 9:56 – moody mope, mallets on drums: cello is melancholy, very melodic
8. 4:45 – another version of #1, less aggressive, with guitar
