Brahms, Johannes / Symphony Nos. 2 & 3 (Von Karajan, Berlin Philharmonic) Label: Polydor, 1964 Brahms (1833-1897) composed his Symphony No. 2 in 1877, finally confident that his symphonic music could equal the daunting quality of Beethoven’s towering works. The symphony combines the lyrical and forceful, the extroverted and introspective. The 1st mvmt opens with a noble horn melody, followed by a lovely melody for violins, then a luxurious viola and cello melody, all developed in gorgeous orchestration. The slow 2nd mvmt is introspective, yearning, reminiscing. The 3rd mvmt’s themes enchant with folk- and seeming classical dance episodes and cross rhythms. The 4th mvmt rapidly alternates an energetic celebratory melody with a somber one, closing with an exulting fanfare. The Symphony No. 3, composed 5 years later, opens with a 3-note melody (F-A-F) symbolizing “Frei aber froh” [Free but happy] followed by a second theme pulsating with warmth. The 2nd mvmt is gentle and lyrical. The 3rd mvmt opening theme is one of soaring melancholy, the second theme quietly sad. The 4th mvmt begins with determination, and breaks out into confident song, promising greatness, then closing with a quiet happiness suggesting that it has been achieved. | ||
