FOLK-ROCK SINGER-SONGWRITER
Another good record from British folk-rocker / protest singer Billy Bragg. No longer the angry, socialist rabble-rouser of earlier work (it’s a shame), Billy has settled down with some better songwriting and more mature singing. Things get a bit country here and there, and there’s a terrific Woody Guthrie cover.
No FCC issues
Mid-tempo. Simple little ditty. John Prine-like. Good, not great. Voice, guitar, bass. (2:19)
* Mid-slow. Classic protest song style. Billy’s in great voice on this one. Acoustic guitar, nice pedal steel, bass, drums. (4:31)
Slow. Simple & bluesy. Good slide guitar solos. (3:03)
** Slow. Amazing Woody Guthrie ballad. Acoustic guitar, bass, piano. Absolutely beautiful. (3:33)
** Slow. Broken-hearted love song. His best singing. Exquisite bluesy guitar. (2:50)
* Mid-slow. Folk song with Bible references. Rich tenor voice. Mandolin, steel guitar. (4:08)
Mid-tempo. He’s over a recent breakup. Slide guitar, piano. (3:15)
Slow. Melancholy farewell to friends. Acoustic guitar, piano, fine voice. (3:16)
** Mid-tempo rocker. Dark & ominous verses; big anthemic refrain. Hell yeah! (3:30)
** Slow, sad country ballad. A song Lucinda Williams could do. Love it. (3:39)
* Mid-slow 6/8. East at first, but keeps building. Lovely piano bridge, nice mandolin, powerful drums. One of his best singing performances. (4:50)
Mid-slow. Simple folk song form… with whistling. (3:11)
