Mudhoney never really goes away... the guys take breaks but ultimately get together and continue with what they've been doing since 1987-88 in the days before "grunge" was recognized as a sub-genre. Heavy garage guitars (with many debts to Neil Young and Crazy Horse), overly competent rhythm section, and Mark Arm's yawling, yelping vocals. No real surprises, except that they're still able to pull it off. Definitely worth a spin or two. No true FCCs -- we received a pre-made radio edit -- but you may not be comfortable with #10 ("douchebags" repeated throughout). 1. * med/varies, more stoner than grunge 2. med(+), nothing really stands out 3. med, stripped down, almost a trucking song with a focus on the lyrics, ends sorta cold 4. * up, contrasts Arm's slow delivery with fast rhythm section, apparently about an exotic dancer? 5. * med(+)/varies, classic Mudhoney growler, major false end 6. med(-), heavy wah-wah guitar echoed in Arm's vocals 7. med(+), dumb-awesome garage rocker that also borrows from Hendrix' "Crosstown Traffic" 8. * med+, heavy rolling groove 9. * med, stronger Crazy Horse vibe 10. med+/varies, is it supposed to be social commentary? ends cold |
