MIKE LeDONNE TRIO: Speak
Cellar Live, 2013
MAINSTREAM JAZZ – Live set from a solid piano trio, straight-up but with a forceful approach and a lot of old-school soul. Some small-club ambiance peeks through on occasion, but it’s a very clean recording with an “immediate” feel.

1. 5:36 – repetitive intro/theme; piano dives & scrambles over driving drums
2. 3:29 – sweet ballad, first two minutes solo piano; hangs off a simple motif
3. 4:44 – upbeat strut with an Ahmad Jamal riff-based feel, rides steady
4. 5:38 – relaxed, smoky ballad: piano wanders off in unexpected arcs
5. 8:27 – dark soul-jazz drive: piano covers lots of ground but holds the groove
6. 6:40 – snappy soul strut: catchy melody but piano gets knotty in middle
7. 5:58 – standard ballad & stroll with a shuffling, odd-meter rhythm
