Review by Luis A. Apolaya|
Cub Sport is up-and-coming Brisbane, Australia indie pop quintet previously known as Cub Scouts (the name change is due to a legal conflict with Scouts Australia). Three of the tracks are danceable, fun, and surprisingly catchy pop. It’s not exactly Top 40 stuff, but bound to please any crowd looking for something upbeat and happy. The other two songs are more mellow and sentimental, but nonetheless enjoyable. Nothing complex or pretentious here, just five Aussie youths making music about life and good times. Recommended for anyone into indie pop or looking for a substitute to Top 40 dance pop. FCC clean.
**1. Energetic start, catchy synth and piano riffs, dance rhythm throughout, soft-voiced vocalist with pretty good falsetto capabilities, as the EP cover suggests it would fit perfectly in a summer beach party.
*2. Slightly similar in structure to first track, upbeat piano riff, short crescendo near the chorus, bright mood throughout, breathy vocals in chorus reminiscent of Beach House, pretty good.
3. Slow piano intro, melancholy mood, song about a love gone wrong, sad flute-like sounds and lamenting “ooh” fill chorus, ends 4 seconds early.
*4. Most upbeat song in EP, piano and synth riffs and dance beats in drums make for a very pool party appropriate song, high falsetto in chorus, guitar chords can be heard occasionally, pretty enjoyable.
*5. Starts with piano and soft voice, song about longing for someone away from home, synths and bass and drums come in about halfway into the track, more breathy vocals, very sentimental.
