Seldom Scene “Long Time . . .” Label: Smithsonian Folkways Joseph Reviewed 4/8/14 Fine new album featuring fresh interpretations of 16 classic songs from Seldom Scene’s catalogue. Great progressive bluegrass. 1 – (3:04) California Cottonfields* Mid-tempo, fine harmonies, nicely done. 2 – (5:13) Wait A Minute* John Starling returns to sing w/Lou Reid & Dudley Connell. 3 – (2:50) What Am I Doing Hangin’ ‘Round Decent up-tempo bluegrass. 4 – (4:02) Hickory Wind* Emmylou Harris contributes to the vocals, divine. 5 – (2:20) I’ll Be No Stranger There Good up-tempo gospel tune. 6 – (2:32) Walk Through This World With Me* Slow, pretty rendition of George Jones hit. 7 – (2:46) Big Train (from Memphis)* Best track on the album, fantastic! 8 – (3:22) With Body And Soul* Starling & Harris on vocals, really fine. 9 – (2:57) Paradise* Good cover of John Prine song, great banjo backing. 10 – (3:20) It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue* Mid-tempo, lovely version. 11 – (3:08) Mean Mother Blues Decent up-tempo cut of Starling original. 12 – (3:08) My Better Years* Great Dudley Connell vocal on Hazel Dickens song. 13 – (2:54) Little Georgia Rose Up-tempo, decent version of Monroe classic. 14 – (4:09) Like I Used To Do* Beautiful song, nostalgic, lovely vocals. 15 – (2:43) Through The Bottom Of The Glass* Another great track, ¾ time. 16 – (5:27) Lorena Pretty slow-to-mid instrumental. |
