THE FAT BABIES: 18th & Racine
Delmark, 2013

TRADITIONAL JAZZ – 1920s/30s style Chicago jazz (don’t confuse it with New Orleans and please don’t call it Dixieland!) played straight-up. The septet blows more “hot” than “sweet,” but this is a pre-swing idiom, so it has a more formal and stiff sound than a swing band: think early Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Eddie Condon. But it’s lots of fun. Very well played stuff from a band that gigs regularly in Chicago.

All good! Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 14, 15

1. 3:12 – relaxed, upbeat cakewalk
2. 3:35 – drag, vocal, fine trumpet
3. 4:33 – Fletcher Henderson strut
4. 2:48 – a fat little stroll, wails
5. 4:20 – proud strutting standard
6. 3:28 – hotcha call & response voc
7. 4:55 – dusky pulse, like Ellington
8. 2:40 – uptempo stomp, steady
9. 2:44 – a jaunty stroll on the town
10. 2:23 – upbeat flapper bounce
11. 3:37 – classic sway, nicely done
12. 2:46 – tick-tock uptempo stomp
13. 3:22 – relaxed old-time saunter
14. 3:13 – great oddball romp
15. 3:18 – lazybones stride piano
