Voices In A Rented Room
Reviewed by BravoMarco
The duo of the Bay Areas own Donovan Quinn & Ben Chasny more notably with Skygreen Leopards & Six Organs Of Admittance respectively, offers us a feast of folky twangy delights. Anything to do with Six Organs… deserves a good listen to & this is no exception. Pretty sure this will become a KZSU fave. A bit sweary in places, but not enough to halt the daytime airplay. Dual strumming with both singers taking the limelight. Shades of Neofolk done in a new lighthearted style.
Bleak Ry Cooder-esque with mellow Throwing Muses mixed in.
Play any, tops: 1,5,8,12
FCC’s* 2, 5, 6, Rest OK
1) Black Bough (4.52) Strained voices & various effects add to this angst driven haunting ode.
2) *Pigeon Town (3.20) Like a lovely lullaby, but with plenty of ”Fucks” thrown in for good measure.
3) Your Girlfriend Might Be A Cop (2.46) Easy listening fare. Top song title though.
4) Sometimes You Crash (2.19) Country like softness.
5) *The Killers And Me (2.51) Atmospheric laid back murder ballad. (“Bitching” - FCC?) – Top drawer.
6) *Your Bullshit (3.51) More up-beat than the previous-Not as strong.
7) It’s The Way (3.51) Easygoing edginess.
8) Welcome To The Navy (1.57) Pulsating military theme. Too short.
9) Burned (3.43) The most accessible maybe. Slightly more upbeat.
10) Town On The Water (3.30) Folksy campfire quality to it.
11) Mother’s Favorite Hated Son (1.36) Almost a 60’s feel. Slowing it down.
12) Cool Daughter (2.41) Sounds simple - that’s why it’s so effective I suppose.
