ORAN ETKIN: Gathering Light
Motéma, 2014
WORLD JAZZ – Clarinetist Oran Etkin forges modern jazz from global sources—East Asia, Israel, New Orleans—leading a very fine quintet that balances a low, earthy tone and compelling rhythms with bright, forceful solos and occasional flights into wild abandon.
All tracks good. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 12
1. 3:06 – percolating rhythm, mysterious Indonesian melody, clarinet wails
2. 4:48 – upbeat, rolling, elusive melody: clarinet & guitar solos both get spiky
3. 4:21 – calm, melancholy Israeli song: just clarinet/bass/drums
4. 7:30 – quietly bubbling duo intro, then striding quintet w/excellent interplay
5. 4:52 – gentle ballad from trad Japanese melody, sad/bluesy feel, perks up
6. 3:16 – silly clarinet/bass duet, hops and squeaks thru off-kilter melody
7. 5:43 – relaxed and bluesy: tenor sax leads, guitar adds rich commentary
8. 5:26 – playful stroll turns wild: sneaky clarinet winds thru bashing drums
9. 5:34 – trio: heavy intro, then quiet Yiddish melody with a bluesy feel
10. 1:10 – slow marching interlude: sax/bass/drums
11. 6:21 – lively intro slides into strangeness, trippy guitar, wild clarinet
12. 3:46 – trio: old standard feels exotic with loose clarinet/bass/drums
