Warren Cuccurullo & Ustad Sultan Khan
The Master
Reviewed by BravoMarco
Guitarist & producer Warren Cuccurullo collaborated with the legendary sarangi player, Ustad Sultan Khan in 1998. Three years after Khan’s death, Cuccurullo has finally released these recordings. A wonderful medley of cultures and influences leaving us with this significant recording. Classical Indian sounds fused into a sensory feast for the listener. Like elements of Philip Glass, Ravi Shankar, Nusrat Fatah Ali Khan.
All really good. No detectable FCC’s
1) The Holy Man’s Plea (4:30) Haunting intro & sparkly sounds creating a mellow mood. Promises to explode but stays restrained. (Instrumental)
2) 4D Suite (11:54) A soundtrack to complete relaxation. The instruments do the slow paced talking here. Sarangi, acoustic guitars & simple percussion. Changes up near the 6-minute mark to a slightly faster pace. Some singing / chanting.
3) Mirror Margana (4:44) Gentle balance between music & vocals. More of an experimental feel.
4) Sikar (4.58) Lovely rustic folkiness about this. The highlight.
5) The Lost Master (5.05) Slow paced hypnotic charmer (Instrumental)
6) Octavia (8:08) Twinkly intro, moves into a more spacey repetitive sound, still laid-back. Soft drone like finish. (Instrumental)
7) You Can’t Tell (2.27) More up beat (compared to the other tracks) with heavier strumming.
