Your Imaginary Friend Reviewed 2014-09-03 | ||
Despite their abrasive name these guys sound like a new wave, psyche punk power pop cover/joke band the way they transform their sound seemingly on demand. This is a retrospective from the late 70’s onward, and a reminder of how common/popular bands like this were at the time, kinda latching on to whatever sound brought in the most clove smoking pegged jeans wearing paying customers. Some songs are primo 60’s garage psyche, others Johnny Thunders/NY Dolls “punk”, some late 70’s power pop, others gritty proto punk, a couple LA early 80’s cowpunk ditties and even a faux reggae track (new wavers loved reggae back then). What a mess! King Missle type vocal delivery betrays how insolent and sarcastic these guys were/are. Good stuff, something for everyone. 1) (2:17) upbeat well produced punky pop 2) (2:40) poppy power pop 3) (2:44) live jangly, new wave surf 4) (2:25) proto punk, driving, heavier 5) (2:41) surfy smarmy 60’s psyche 6) (2:44) 60’s psyche garage pop w/ catchy choruses 7) (2:16) train chugging rocking w/ cool sounds 8) FCCs 9) (1:36) silly sorta redneck “I was born in a little crack house” 10) 3:49) carribean mildly reggae 11) (1:23) surfy insolent punky 12) (2:39) Wall of Voodoo twangy cowpunk 13) (2:59) Nilsson/Midnight Cowboy’esque twangy waltzy instrumental 14) (2:44) tom tom beat rock, psyche raunchy garage 15) (3:03) full on retro 60’s psyche garage, bouncy 16) (2:25) cool rhythm, rock beat 17) (3:47) smarmy swaggering near-cock-rock 18) (3:34) Johnny Thunders/Dolls rock and rock 19) (1:51) mid paced 20) (5:22) psyche revival 21) (4:02) WoV cow-twang returns 22) (3:44) new wavey psyche surfy and good beat 23) (2:42) “Big Mistake”- list of things deemed mistakes of driving punky rock 24) (5:44) faux love song, strummy 25) FCCs |
