About 15 years into a career full of darkly beautiful and mostly hushed recordings, Rivulets bandleader Nathan Amundson makes a leap forward into widescreen, scorched rock (to borrow words from former GM Adam Pearson). Amundson and his two backing players lose no nuance in the process, delivering an album that’s as warm and hazy as it is intense, as consoling as it is cutting. It’s consistently beautiful, and even at the loudest moments it feels deeply human. Favorites: 1, 2, 3, 6, 10. No FCCs detected.
1. *(4:20)—Very slow. Starts with guitar and vocals, explodes at the halfway point. Margo May sings backup.
2. *(4:52)—Slow, overwhelmingly sad, trudging, country-influenced. Great chorus.
3. *(2:49)—Mid-tempo, the fastest, most pop-oriented and immediate song.
4. (5:41)—Slow, loping, looser in structure. Occasional bursts of heavy, searing guitar.
5. (2:21)—Simple, lo-fi plucked acoustic guitar + harmonies.
6. *(7:23)—Tribute to Jason Molina. Slow, rooted in Molina’s sound circa Magnolia Electric Co., but hazier. “I feel a fever coming on.”
7. (3:34)—Slow, calm, slightly twangy waltz.
8. (1:11)—Short, sweet, minimal song of devotion.
9. (5:54)—Angry, loping, dejected, subdued, similar in feel to track 4.
10. *(3:11)—Spare, nocturnal, with quiet ringing guitar and barely-there, early Low drums.
