Telepathic Juan Reviewed 2015-11-14 | ||
Moyamoya’s self-titled debut album steps back and forth between post rock and math rock territories while disguising as a synthesizer-less mid 1970’s British progressive rock band. The instrumental recordings of this Jacksonville, Florida trio are full of drastic melodic changes, intensive use of dissonant chords, and long upbeat rhythmic sequences. RIYL: Explosions In The Sky, Slint, Mogwai, Don Caballero, and Bitch Magnet. NO WORDS, NO FCC’s. Recommended Tracks: 1, 3, 4, and 6 1. (8:43) *Sorry I Called You He-Man – Long introductory track negotiating between jangling pleasant guitar rhythms, pedal generated feedback, and spazzcore instrumentations. Nice guitar layering. 2. (3:30) Full-On Half-Wit – More like a prog rock and metal infused exploration here. Interesting fast-slow rhythmic changes. 3. (5:54) *Spring Guide To Fashion – Similar exploration here as previous track, only this time, there are guitar solos and an attempt to get loud and distorted. 4. (4:29) **Open Letter To A Football Hero – The most ambitious track on the album. The combination of organ, guitar, and bass parts builds up with great intensity. 5. (6:44) Spurgeon-Haddix – Dramatic and Eclectic. Guitars sound sharp on this track. 6. (5:28) *I Don't Need An Advocate, I Need An Exorcist – 1960’s prog rock meets 1980’s American college rock. Epic battle. |
