San Francisco’s Pink Section is one of those bands everyone knows about but hardly anybody has heard of their music. This outstanding self-titled, overdue anthology collects the band's rare 1979 single, their 1980 self-titled EP, unreleased demos, and live material released by the always-reliable San Francisco label Superior Viaduct. Described as a dada-no wave-art rock band, Pink Section relies on their vulnerability as self-taught musicians, 70’s idealisms filtered through art school philosophies and aesthetics, and the intensity of the-then captivating San Francisco underground music scene, to craft pulsating rhythms fueled with defiant and uncompromising creativity. Sometimes political, sometimes just irreverent, Pink Section’s recordings remain fresh and filled with interesting ideas and amazing energy. Highly recommended.

RIYL: Y Pants, Bush Tetras, Suburban Lawns, Devo, and Inflatable Boy Clams.

RECOMMENDED TRACKS: 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, and 11

1. (2:33) **Tour Of China – Side A from their debut 1979 single. Amazing beat and catchy as hell. Instant classic.
2. (2:32) **Shopping – Side B from their debut 1979 single. Another post-punk gem.
3. (3:35) Wine World – From their 1980 EP. Fast beat. Dramatic and weird.
4. (1:36) *Midsummer New York – From their 1980 EP. Channeling The B-52’s here!
5. (2:50) **Flat Dog – From their 1980 EP. Devo-ish melodies with exceptional synth parts.
6. (3:29) Part Time – From their 1980 EP. Slow track with a surprisingly faster synth driven section towards the end that rocks.
7. (4:08) **Francine's List – From their 1980 EP. The best realized track on the EP. Awesomely strange. One of my favorites.
8. (1:48) **Safety Instruction – Unreleased demo from 1979. Captivating recording. Less playful but with a more synth punk feeling here.
9. (2:28) *Jane Blank – Unreleased demo from 1979. Trippy vocals and lyrical work feel just right here. Solid tune!
10. (1:43) Cars Don't Wait For Love – Unreleased demo from 1979. Strange and cool. Silly pedestrians!!
11. (3:03) **Lonely Fashionette – Recorded live at The Mabuhay Gardens, San Francisco, July 12th 1979. Perhaps not the best recording but such a great document showcasing the band’s amazing energy. Great song too!
12. (2:36) Been In The Basement 30 Years – Recorded Live at The Deaf Club, San Francisco, March 11th, 1979. Better recording, amazing punk attitude with some insane vocals.
