MAINSTEAM JAZZ COMBO

Bay Area-based pianist, Adam Shulman, leads a sextet with trumpet, tenor & alto saxes, bass & drums. Arrangements often feature 2 or 3 melodic instruments playing in unison or in close harmony, producing a chorus effect or the magnified sectional sound typical of a big band. All but two tracks were composed by Shulman.

All instrumental. No FCC issues

1 ** Fast. Tight ensemble playing at start & end; middle has extended choruses by trumpet, tenor, & piano. Bass & drums keep it lively. Named for a North Beach music venue. (6:18)
2 * Mid-slow. Laid back with a hint of bossa nova. Pleasing solos by the 3 horns. (8:49)
3 Mid-tempo. Easy-going. Sounds a bit like a 60s TV show theme. (10:19)
4 Slow ballad. Pretty, graceful, muted. (7:39)
5 * Mid-tempo.Slightly swinging & soulful. Each melodic instrument takes a solo. Held together with a light touch on drums & a walking bass line. (8:25)
6 * Mid-fast. Blue and improvisational. Good solos by trumpet. (7:42)
7 * Slow, bluesy stroll. It’s late in the set, and the lights are down low. (6:06)
8 Slow. Jazz standard from a 30s film. Pretty song-like melody. (6:26)
