PIANO TRIO JAZZ This French born, NYC-based drummer isn’t well known: I found no online articles on him nor reviews of this album. Still Penant is working steadily in Manhattan jazz clubs: his web site lists frequent gigs around town. Here he leads a piano-bass-drums trio through a set of upbeat, happy, melodic tunes. We get a couple old Broadway songs; the rest are covers of compositions by famous jazz masters. It’s light going, enjoyable, nightclub jazz. All instrumental. No FCC issues. 1 * Very fast. Often sung tune from “No No Nanette” (1920s). Bright, galloping piano melodies; quick flourishes on drums. (5:22) 2 * Mid-fast. Hip, swinging melody. Good rhythm. (7:21) 3 Mid-tempo. Easy ramble on the ivories with little ornamentation. Steady rhythm. (6:59) 4 Fast. Cole Porter classic done too fast IMO. A bit heavy handed as well. (8:20) 5 Fast. Spirited toe-tapper by the great bebop pianist Bud Powell. (5:20) 6 Very slow. The only ballad here. Pretty, but sleepy. (9:29) 7 ** Very fast. Another bebop challenge for the pianist (I liked this more than #5). Some nice breaks by the bass and the drums make this fun and interesting. (8:14) 8 Mid-fast. Usually a slow love song (see Shirley Horn), here it’s amped up. (12:07) 9 * Mid-tempo. Swingin’ and pleasant. There’s a rare bass solo. (5:49) | ||
