Shay Z Reviewed 2015-11-22 | ||
II – Fuzz (In the Red) Shay Z California’s prolific, multi-instrumentalist Ty Segall brings drumming and vocals to back guitarist Charles Moothart and bassist Chad Ubovich in Fuzz’s new album II. II continues Fuzz’s emphasis on paranoid vocals over heavy, fuzzy (hence the name) guitars. Cohesive garage/classic rock style throughout with some extended jams allowing for some wild solos. Some interesting string sections on a few songs, but mostly typical lead, bass, vocals, drum arrangement reminiscent of your dad’s favorite rock groups. RIYL: Black Sabbath, Ty Segall, the lovechild of David Bowie and Ozzy Osbourne No FCCs Recommended Tracks: 2, 3, 7, 13 1. (07:05) Long form jam with some fuzzed out vocals and crunchy guitar hook, slow start: song kicks in at 1:00, wicked guitar solo at 3:30, tempo change at 5:00 2. (02:45) Sick guitar chops throughout, short chanted lyrics, clearer than previous song 3. (05:21) More melodic vocals, traditional verse-chorus format, sick soloing at 3:00 Some wild, tense violining and string portion at 4:00 4. (4:48) Gentle intro but kicks into high gear at 0:38, crazy glam-rock solo at 3:00 9. (1:49) Raw, in your face, yelled vocals, metal punk of sorts 10. (4:09) Plodding track with slamming guitar riffs, chill outro at 3:40 11. (2:31) Catchy, almost-pop hook with some awesome guitar soloing around 2:00 12. (2:34) Solely instrumental track, wild electronic skittering experimentation 13. (5:58) Plodding intro, violins, whispery, echoing guitars and vocals, song pivots at 2:30, louder, acid-dripping vocals 14. (13:49) Groovy bass line, pounding drums, screeching, competing guitar solos Percussion solo at 4:31, guitar noodling, instrumental jam session |
