The Solo Trombone Record by New York trombone player, composer, electronic performer, installation artist, scholar, and MacArthur Fellow, George Lewis, is an absorbing exercise of avant-garde jazz executed with a great sense of exploration and experimentation. This reissue, originally released in 1976 and recorded in one day, has been remastered from the original master tapes and finds a then young 24-year-old trombonist playing horn solo on his debut with masterful technical ability and a pronounced interest in mixing both traditional and unconventional jazz melodies and harmonies. Deeply moving.

RIYL: Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, John Zorn, Muhal Richard Abrams, and Derek Bailey.

NO WORDS, NO FCC’s.
Recommended Tracks: 1, 2 and 3

1. (20:11) **Toneburst (Piece For 3 Trombones Simultaneously) – Fascinating composition constructed around three overdubbed trombone parts. Sometimes pulsating, sometimes crooning. Just beautiful.
2. (7:52) Phenomenology – Simultaneously rhythm & blues and visionary. Amazing plunger technique.
3. (7:17) *Untitled Dream Sequence – Just like how music sounds in a dream.
4. (6:00) *Lush Life – Poignant rendition of Billy Strayhorn’s piece. Cinematic.
