Margy Kahn Reviewed 2016-01-07 | ||
Nicely produced vocal jazz with 12 piece orchestra; voice quality reminiscent of Sam Cook, interesting lyrics by vocalist/composer educated in Nigeria and England; has a bit of a Brazilian vibe No FCC's detected. Favorite tracks: 2, 5, 7, 9 1-Dark Matter (4:06) – psychology of being African *2-The Girl She Was (4:21) – nice flute opening; great voice quality; interesting lyrics 3-Jankoriko (5:00) – insistent beat, story of injustice 4-Love Again (5:01)- slow rock *5-Patience Endures (4:55) – starts with bass figure; interesting clapping accompanies long detailed complaint 6-Herbs for Your Heartache (4:29)- critique of corrupt African leaders backed by mellifluous jazz *7-It's the Peace that Deafens (4:43)- lyrical, contemplative piano and voice 8-The Voodoo (5:26) – uptempo; lots of percussion *9-Invincible (4:17)- ballad to invincible love; nice trumpet flourishes 10-In Your Shoes (4:39) – chastizing Young Turks, African style 11-Orunmila (4:38)- the denial of past association in the diaspora 12-In the End (3:52)- meditation on vagaries of love/friendship |
