JAZZ: SMALL COMBO

Lew Tabackin (flute & tenor sax) is known primarily for decades of work with his wife, pianist/composer/arranger Toshiko Akiyoshi, in the Akiyoshi-Tabackin Big Band and in the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra. Here he is playing his own compositions plus some standards, backed by just bass and drums.

No FCC issues.

1 * Mid-fast. Good, toe-tapping reading of John Lewis’s (later of the Mod Jazz Qrt) late bop (1950s) classic. Led mainly by tenor sax; the bass & drums both take solos. (9:50)
2 Slow. Flute. Sounds improv’d. The intent seems to be impressionistic, pastoral. (7:20)
3 ** Mid-fast. Catchy back-and-forth between tenor & bass. Fun, swingin’ number. (8:21)
4 Slow. Old-fashioned sounding love song. Relaxed tenor, easy bass & drum ‘comp. (5:53)
5 * Mid-slow. 1930s show tune and oft-recorded standard impressively done here on flute. Bass and drum solos midway thru. Gathers pace. Pleasant. Worth a listen. (7:34)
6 * Slow. Warbling tenor sax plays a blusy Strayhorn tune over quiet walking bass. (8:17)
7 Slow. Flute mimics bird calls in a tune Ellington & Strayhorn wrote for QE II. (8:20)
8 * Very fast. Pop song (1930) done here in a showy bebop manner on tenor sax. (5:04)
