Reger, Max: Music for Clarinet and Piano (Alan R. Kay, clarinet, Jon Klibinoff, piano) Label: Bridge Records, 2016 Reviewed: 2016-29-05. Gary Lemco Max Reger (1873-1916) was a German composer in the Brahms tradition of post-Romantic expression, conservative compared to his contemporaries in the 12-tone school. The clarinet works featured are lyrical and moody, rather dark-hued. Reger is fond of chromatic harmony and passing dissonances, though he remains tonal and aware of classical structures. He employs the clarinet’s full range, calling for sudden contrasts in color and register. His 2nd mvmts tend to be lively, the 3rd mvmts reflective. The Sonata in B-flat, Op. 107 is expansive, requiring strong breath-control. Its harmonies are more adventurous than the two Op. 49 sonatas. The last mvmt of Sonata No. 2 in F-sharp Minor quotes the Waltz of the Flowers from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. The opening Albumblatt and closing Tarantella give us soft undulations and then a jig in A-B-A form. These two pieces serve as Introduction and Encore to the entire album. 1. Albumblatt, WoO II/13 (1:49) 2. Sonata in A-flat Major, Op. 49, No. 1, Allegro affanato (7:18) 3. Vivace (4:06) 4. Larghetto, ma non troppo, un poco con moto (3:46) 5. Prestissimo assai (4:29) 6. Sonata in F-sharp Minor, Op. 49. No. 2, Allegro dolente 7. Vivacissimo (2:43) 8. Larghetto, un poco con moto (4:12) 9. Allegretto affabile, con moto (5:01) 10. Sonata in B-flat Major, Op. 107m Moderato (11:20) 11. Vivace (5:15) 12. Adagio (5:58) 13. Allegretto con grazia, vivvace (7:06) 14. Tarantella, WoO II/12 (1:25) |
