Prince Edward Island trio plays traditional songs with skill, verve, speed, and warmth (“aupres du poele means “around the woodstove” so it's literal as well as metaphoric); mixture of Celtic and French-Canadian tunes and lyrics that makes you went to get up and dance or get nostalgic for times past (or maybe wish you too lived on P.E.I.) NO FCC issues; All tracks are good; Favorite tracks 2, 3,10, 11 1-The Ukrainian Expedition (4:44) – slower and then faster fiddle medley – foot-stomping pleasure *2-Aupres du Poele (3:18) – “around the woodstove” – guitar more front and center here – halfway through, French-Canadian lyrics come in followed by Irish mouth music (scatting) *3—Igen (6:27) – medley starts off as a fling with a banjo part; segues to a slip jig and then a standard jig; lovely rhythms; lovely playing 4- When First I Came to Caledonia (4:28) – starts with drone; slower tune; a bit minor; nice fiddle interlude; gets quieter and lyrics get clearer toward end 5- Shoot the Moon (4:33) – rollicking instrumental 6 – Maluron Lurette (4:29) – starts with a capella French, nice bodhran type percussion 7- The Town – (4:45) – English lyrics sung with nice harmony; pretty fiddle interlude 8- Lament for Buckles (4:50) – cool instrumental with banjo and fiddle; speeds up for “Ron's Broken Chair” 9 – Maudit Anglais (4:49) – male/female duet in French; picks up speed and becomes instrumental *10-Coal Not Dole (3:12) - drone plus voice; the end of mining labor *11-Duhk Duhk Goat (7:28) – starts with Nordic sounding fiddle tune; segues to Celtic; backed with the bodhran; lots of variety and speed |
