CONTEMPORARY CLASSICAL
David Kechley composes for the unusual combination of classical guitar and saxophone. These pieces are avant garde but quite listenable, with Japanese (Zen garden) allusions.
All instrumental. No FCC issues.
“Points of Departure: Five pieces for guitar & saxophone” Each may be played alone.
1 ** Very slow. Arpeggios & brass bells. Lovely melody on soprano sax. Quiet fade. (5:40)
2 ** Mid-tempo. Guitar & sax scurry around in short, halting phrases. Staccato fun. (2:41)
3 Three sections. Slow & quiet, mostly sax. Slightly faster, lyrical. Very slow, sad. (4:16)
4 * Fast. Energetic & very lively. Bouncy sax over hard strummed chords. (3:48)
5 Slow. A recap of #1: arpeggios & brass bells again; repeated themes; quiet fade. (3:11)
6 “Bounce” Fast. Melodic motif played over & over, extended, developed. Mostly hectic, but with some lyrical breaks. Sax leads mostly, with guitarist playing chords. (14:30)
“Sea of Stones: Concerto for guitar & sax” (& orchestra). Flows together with no breaks.
7 Drums open. Sax states a theme. Melodies are punctuated by stings & percussion. (4:09)
8 * Slow at first. Flute flutters through. Horns, oboe join the sax. Gets louder, faster. (3:24)
9 ** Mid-tempo. The full orch now: many voices, many themes. Beautiful. Fades. (2:02)
10 Attempts at lyric melody are interrupted by harsh, staccato blasts. Uncomfortable. (2:23)
11 * Soft. Lovely guitar answered by flute, sax. Pastoral. Drums & horns flow to 12. (4:56)
12 Fast. Trumpets call. Tutti. Sax & guitar re-emerge, as do the drums from the open. (3:34)
13 Quiet & peaceful. Shimmering ambiance rather than melody. Long decrescendo. (2:28)
