This is the 6th record from Chicago indie folk band Fruit Bats. This record is miles above the last couple Fruit Bats releases. The melodies are so infectious and, at points, I am reminded of Beatles style songwriting. For those who don’t know the Fruit Bats already, I guess I would categorize with Indie Folk? RIYL: Avett Brothers, Head and the Heart, Lumineers, Bob Dylan, Beatles…many others.
FCC Clean!!
Favorites: you really can't go wrong with this record, but start with 1, 2, and 4.
1. (3:39) From A Soon-To-Be Ghost Town - Love this song, uptempo, great story in the lyrics, really sets the tone for a great album.
2. (3:04) Humbug Mountain Song - Foot stomps, piano, and banjo. The melody is almost Beatles-esq, really great.
3. (4:09) None Of Us - Mid-tempo, another great melody, this one feels like it has a heavy Bob Dylan reference.
4. (3:52) Absolute Loser - This title track is great, another display of great songwriting. Downtempo, great instrumentation.
5. (3:50) Baby Bluebird - Downtempo acoustic love song.
6. (5:04) My Sweet Midwest - Uptempo rock track, a love song to the Midwest.
7. (3:56) Birthday Drunk - Acoustic guitar, piano, strings and percussion. Downtempo and beautiful.
8. (3:30) Good Will Come To You - Keyboards accompany another stellar guitar and vocal melody. Vintage feel.
9. (2:58) It Must Be Easy - Downtempo waltz.
10. (3:29) Don't You Know That - Midtempo, more of the same, another great song.
