This recording of Gregorian chants features the nuns choir of the Abbey of Saint-Michel of Kergonan, in Plouhamel, France. The nuns live according to the rules of Saint Benedict, living in silence and the solitude of the cloisters.
Gregorian chant, a form of monophonic, unaccompanied sacred song of the western Roman Catholic Church, developed mainly in western and central Europe in the 9th and 10th centuries The text, phrases, words and syllables can be sung in various ways. Most straightforward is recitation on the same tone, which is called "syllabic" as each syllable is sung to a single tone. "Neumatic" chants are more embellished, and ligatures, a connected group of notes, abound in the text. This disc’s chants are primarily Syllabic and Neumatic. Melismatic chants are ornate chants in which elaborate melodies are sung on long sustained vowels ranging from five or six notes per syllable to over 60.
