FUNKY BIG-BAND JAZZ
Here’s a 15-piece horns ensemble out of Durham, NC, playing with plenty of groove. Instruments include 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, saxes, keys, vibes, drums. Not great, but fun.
Instrumental (except #5).
No FCC issues.
1 * Mid-fast. Bongo start; alto states a theme; full band follows. (4:26)
2 ** Mid-fast. Bouncy & syncopated. Nicely features vibraphone and perc. (4:20)
3 Mid-tempo. Loose random stuff. As the name implies, doesn’t go anywhere. (4:29)
4 * Mid-tempo. Dense texture of horns. Good sax solo midway. Chaotic toward end. (4:53)
5 ** Mid-tempo. “No lock, no key; open the door,” sung as an intro. Then the horns go off in multiple separate directions for an interesting, wild trip. (2:48)
6 Mid-tempo. Vibes, trumpet & drums to start; then everyone. A bit of incomprehensible vocal. Just ok. (6:30)
7 Fast. Jumbled and hectic (hence the name). Sudden stop. (2:57)
8 * Mid-tempo. Slinky clarinet lead w old-timey feel. Second half is fast, loud, wild. (5:21)
9 Mid-fast. Little melodic fragment goes round & round. Big loud tutti finish. (3:57)
