BENEDIKT JAHNEL TRIO: The Invariant ECM, 2017 MODERN JAZZ – This international trio hails from Germany, Spain, and Canada. Their lively interplay contrasts high, twisting piano runs with deep, thick bass tones and fluid drumming. They seem to click most when Jahnel’s slippery piano lets loose, orbiting the others in swooping arcs. The slower ballads didn’t grab me the same way. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 7 1. 5:51 – mid/uptempo: rolling piano intro, then glides through obstacle course 2. 5:14 – midtempo stroll: light piano skates over thick bass 3. 9:32 – elegant piano intro; trio cycles through surges & falls, serious ending 4. 3:50 – heavy tone, pensive feel with simple melody, gradually fades away 5. 6:46 – uptempo drum & bass support bright piano patterns & riffs 6. 5:41 – calm ballad, deep bass, moves at a slow, deliberate pace 7. 3:59 – slow and cerebral: trio abstraction anchored by simple chords 8. 4:50 – ballad: dances with a slow formality, lightens a bit in second half [ Fo ] - 6 April 2017 | ||
