CRAIG TABORN: Daylight Ghosts
ECM, 2017

POSTMODERN JAZZ – Lumpy grooves, spiky abstract patterns, and mysterious set pieces from the ever-adventurous Taborn (piano) with Chris Speed (reeds) lurking quietly in the mix, Chris Lightcap (basses) anchoring the quartet, and Dave King, drummer from The Bad Plus, adding an aggressive drive. But there are deep subtleties here too, and hints of magic in the slower pieces that make this a very intriguing disc.

Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 5, 6, 8

1. 3:34 – chugging groove built from abstracted riffs, piano spins out
2. 7:46 – relaxed tempo, a bit spooky, switches to flinty uptempo free jazz
3. 7:37 – slow, steady: mysterious melody opens up, then a forbidding groove
4. 3:15 – midtempo: complex clockwork comes together, piano goes out briefly
5. 5:38 – wide open clarinet, sparse piano/synth, 2nd half picks up walking rhythm, light percussion, suggestions of gamelan music
6. 8:16 – bass rhythms for 2:00, perky mystery quartet, steamroller ending
7. 5:39 – moody chamber-jazz ballad with clarinet, sparkles at the fringes
8. 4:32 – introspective solo piano, drums come in gradually, turns stormy
9. 8:29 – very slow, sax out front, synth/drum pattern pulls it into dark territory
