Aryeh Frankfurter plays nyckelharpa (the Swedish keyed violin), cittern, guitar, Celtic harp, violin, viola, cello, pennywhistle, accordion and bass on his favorite Swedish tunes, old and new with his own take and twist; Swedish music sounds oddly modern and classical while being grounded in folk tradition; a delight NO FCC's; Favorite tracks 2, 3, 7, 8, 12, 14 but all are worth playing 1- Ante Sundin's –4:23 – lively bowed tune, Swedish bluegrass *2-Juringlus –5:38-- traditional old Swedish melody that has migrated to Celtic and bluegrass music; delicate and beautiful **3- Soren's Waltz –3:46 –slower with whistle and harp; composed by Jan Ekedahl; bit of Celtic flavor; music from Gotland 4—Polska for Adam –2:56 – by Josefina Paulson – lively rhythm with that major/minor Scandinavian shift 5 – The Troll Realm Polska – 2:44 –Nickelharpa showpiece, unaccompanied; very lively; a bit classical sounding *6 –Ice on the Water –6:07 – tune composed by an American adapted for nyckelharpe –haunting waltz *7- The Pen-Knife Murderer –3:33- dark but lively *8- Heaven's Polska –4:53 – Finnish tune with Lisa Lynne on harp; lovely and slightly ethereal 9- The Fly Fishing Polska – 3:41 – modern tune in the classic folk mode *10- Long Dance: The Festive Polska –5:43-- harp & nyckelharpe are gorgeous together; you can almost see the dancers 11-Byss Kalle's Gift Tune – 3:42 – played at weddings when the guests present their hosts with gifts *12- Magnus Theorin- 3:16 – from the 1700's; from major to minor and back again; complex and intense 13- Summer Waltz –2:25 – pennywhistle gives it a Celtic flair *14- Barseback –3:24 – “Viking” sound according to Aryeh with exciting underbeat |
