Geoffrey Hanson (b. 1939) founded the Ripieno Society and the East Finchley Arts Festival, each devoted to choral, especially Baroque Period music, but including music by contemporary composers. He has written organ and church music and large-scale works. Five Nocturnes for Tenor and Chamber Orchestra (2009) sets lyrics by Clare, Herbertson, Lawrence, Flatman, and Henley to songful, playful, somewhat stringent harmonies. The Clarinet Concerto (1988) is in three mvmts, played without a break, alternately energetic and pensive, always mildly dissonant. Orpheus for Chorus and Piano (1984) sets words by Osbert Sitwell, opens quietly, moves to a series of mildly dissonant dancing melodies and closes with the dancers exhausted but content. Jubilate Deo (1983) sets Psalm 100, “Be Joyful in the Lord” for chorus and organ, but sounds more troubled than joyful. Odyssey for Cello and Strings (2012) in 3 continuous mvmts laments, sings of dramatic events, and closes with energetic, dark lyricism. Now Welcom Somer for Unaccompanied Chorus (1978) is a cycle of 5 part songs that evoke an English summer’s day, but the mild dissonance conveys threats of unhappiness, and some actual misfortunes.
