Dreamy, outsider house. Maya Bouldry-Morrison is a trans house producer out of New York producing some brilliant shit! She makes atmospheric house tracks that are augmented by some interesting breakbeats and intriguing percussion throughout. An “overtly queer” record according to Octo Octa herself, the song titles and atmosphere convey her challenging years coming out and transitioning. While often thoughtful and somber, it’s all gorgeously arranged and wonderfully hypnotic. I cannot recommend it highly enough!
Genre: Straight up house! Dreamier at times, breakbeat-y at times
RIYL: Anthony Naples, Terre Thaemlitz, Jack J, Moiré
Favorite Tracks: 1, 2, 3, 5
FCCs: Nope
Where Are We Going?, Pt. 1 (7:31) * - Long, chill intro, atmospheric house, brilliantly cozy, floating piano, even the bass is barely there
On Your Lips (6:09) ** - More solidly grounded groove, light percussion with steady bass, low warped singing drifts throughout
Fleeting Moments of Freedom (Wooo) (6:24) * - Cool scratching! Dancy track with scratching throughout to keep you on your toes
Until the Moon Sets (5:03) - So strong, dreamier than previous too tracks, distant keys, still a strong sense of rhythm
No More Pain (Promises to a Younger Self) (2:36) ** - Slower, dreamier intro, then some sweet breakbeats, looped soul in background
Move On (Let Go) [De-stress Mix] (5:11) - also more breakbeat heavy, some cool looped hiphop vocal samples
Preparation Rituals (7:55) - really upbeat, more of the same
Adrift (8:47) - much darker, brooding, almost techno track, syncopated bass
Where Are We Going?, Pt. 2 - dreamy intro blends into keys and long build, dancy beat beneath playful, dreamy keys
