In 2014, Bully, the project fronted by Alicia Bognanno, were voted Nashville’s Best Band, giving the “Nashville Sound” a different dynamic. Forget about country or Americana, Bully’s full-throttle grunge brought the noise, attitude, and brutally honest lyricism to Music City. Their excellent debut album, Feels Like, followed a year after and rekindled the angst and grit recalled in the songs of Hole, Nirvana, and Garbage. For the encore, Bully recapture the spirit and energy of the early ’90s with a record that is both a personal account and a political statement, and it’s awesome.
FCC: 6, 9, 12
Like: Diet Cig, Speedy Ortiz, Chastity Belt, Beach Slang.
Play: 1, 2, 5, 8
1.Feel the Same (1:59) - Cranking up its pace slowly, building energy building from the first beat of the drums.
2.Kills to Be Resistant (3:25) - Raw drums, really emotional track.
3.Running (3:41) - Purring bass for a delicious rhythmic hook that dances with the guitar lines.
4.Seeing It (3:31) - Emotive guitar riffs, the psychedelic harmonies.
5.Guess There (3:00) - Pavement meets Pixies very nice track.
6.Blame (3:23) - Built on a simple riff, pre-chorus and nails.
7.Focused (4:30) - Chugs along like the heavy-hearted sister to a Pixies track.
8.Not the Way (2:35) - Whirling, extra dirty in tone while upping their catchy writing in bizarre writing.
9.Spiral (2:31) - Down-beat moods and turn them into something self-deprecatingly progressive.
10.Either Way (2:17) - Burns with some of the most punk energy of the entire album.
11.You Could Be Wrong (2:42) - Blends dreamy vocal production with absolutely washed out guitars.
12.Hate and Control (4:13) - Melodic cleanser, a song that blurs between the political and personal.
