SHAUN MARTIN: Focus
Ropeadope, 2018

PIANO TRIO – This is only the second release from Martin as a leader, but he’s well established from his work with Snarky Puppy, gospel star Kirk Franklin, and many others. In keeping with the title, the disc is a short, direct, and graceful slice of straight-ahead contemporary jazz.

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 6

1. 5:25 – lively uptempo with a breezy samba groove: agile solos from all
2. 4:55 – upbeat, souful stroll with a happy gospel air; it’s a toe-tapper
3. 4:25 – standard ballad has a nicely smoky feel, piano skips across melody
4. 1:09 – too-short interlude quotes funky riff from Prince’s “Kiss”
5. 5:11 – speedy, steady rhythm under gentle nostalgic melody, upbeat solos
6. 6:16 – striding uptempo: catchy melody, solos go from quiet to bold
7. 1:54 – snippet of a ballad, solo then trio — fades in & out
