Highly acclaimed English/Italian artist who channels the drama and choice meaty instrumentation of bands like Shotgun Wedding, Birthday Party, Anita Lane, The Bad Seeds, Tindersticks, Crime and the City Solution, Souixsie and the Banshees, The Walkabouts. Julee Cruise/Badalamente (Twin Peaks) moments here and there too. Her instrument is not just her sultry operatic voice but guitar on which she is masterful. My buddy Joe Goldring (Enablers) who played guitar with Swans described her as “the best in the world”. Classically trained on violin, her show at the Independent several years ago ranks in my all-time top 5 (and “I’ve forgotten more shows than you’ll ever see”). Her third album, the previous being shockingly great; this could be her best. Start with track 1. Picking up where Rowland S. Howard left off.
1)* (3:46) quintessential Calvi, sultry, rhythmic and sexy 2)* (4:12) super cool and sexy with that Twin Peaks/Angelo Badalamenti baritone guitar tone 3) (4:04) poppy almost slick feel with melodies in chorus 4)* (4:41) searing guitar lead in bridge, dark sultry tones 5)* (4:55) pretty guitar in intro leads to to lush beautiful ballad of cinematic drama 6)* (3:41) well this one could make a dead man… super sexy sultry, finger snaps and swingy, big tymphany drums, with some serious bad ass guitar playing near end, wow 7) (4:47) starts a capela then a dramtic epic fade-in, huge (8) (5:16) urgent subtle western gallop w big dramatic breakdowns 9) (4:14) somber quiet, just her voice and guitar subtle orchestration fades in late 10) (4:08) upbeat tone
