Mudhoney are celebrating their thirtieth anniversary in 2018, and they are marking that occasion with the release of their tenth studio album Digital Garbage on their long-time label Sub Pop. This being only their third album in the last ten years, there is quite a bit of interest around their long awaited return. Digital Garbage is an album that surveys the current cultural and technological landscape and shakes its head before rearing back and screaming in exasperation.
Like: Melvins, The Jesus Lizard, Butthole Surfers, Meat Puppets
FCC on: 6, 7, 8
Play: 2, 4, 5, 11
1.Nerve Attack (2:45) - It’s all about the drooping yelps and slushing guitar melodies, a lovely racket.
2.Paranoid Core (2:31) - Raises its banner with a sneering critique of Alex Jones-style fear mongering.
3.Please Mr. Gunman (3:30) - Could’ve fallen right off the back of a lost Stooges record.
4.Kill Yourself Live (4:48) - Twangy garage-punk guitar and Farfisa buildup.
5.Night and Fog (4:04) - Ponderous but smartly arranged art-punk song that sounds like End Hits-era Fugazi.
6.21st Century Pharisees (2:35) - Hypocritical Christian conservatives get a thrashing.
7.Hey Neanderfuck (2:40) - Rides in on a superb bit of ensemble playing and tears off another burning solo.
8.Prosperity Gospel (3:48) - Is an astonishingly brutal tirade against... well, everything.
9.Messiah's Lament (3:04) - Jangly guitar chords and plaintive vocals.
10.Next Mass Extinction (3:25) - Grim apocalyptic outlook, there will be no new society to replace us when we’re gone.
11.Oh Yeah (1:29) - A short, driving punk jam that stands up to the classic Mudhoney sound.
