The Brooklyn-based artist’s fifth studio album. Synth-flavored alt-rock that’s more driving, dark and experimental than her previous work. Universally acclaimed by critics as in consideration for one of the best of 2019 (yes, already). Extraordinary, both musically and lyrically. Soul baring and sensitive. Highly creative. Written during big changes in Van Etten’s life: her first pregnancy, going to school to earn a counseling degree (partly to better understand her fans’ deep emotional connections with her music), and her emergence as an actress in the Netflix drama, “The OA.” Really worth your time.

1. (4:46) I Told You Everything — FCC: shit (twice). Slow and dramatic, with big piano chords and sustained synth notes. Raw and intimate vocals.
2. (4:34) No One’s Easy To Love — Stop-and-go beat, with bass and drums. Twinkling keys. Distorted, yet wistful, vocals. Some synth strings. ***
3. (4:28) Memorial Day — Narcotic and spaced-out. Intriguing synth landscape with saxophone-like synth flourishes. Hazy, heavily reverbed vocals.
4. (3:02) Comeback Kid — A single. Melodic with a thumping beat. Sustained organ and synths. Powerful and determined. ****
5. (5:14) Jupiter 4 — Gothic…with deep, throaty synths mixed with shrill, swirling atmospheric tones. Simple beat. Astral lead vocals and haunting harmonies. (Named after the 1970s-era analog synthesizer Van Etten used to compose many of the songs on the album.) ***
6. (4:26) Seventeen — Self-assured anthem to herself at 17. Driving beat. Pulsing bass. Sustained, warbling synths. Piano. Confident vocals. Brilliant song!! ****
7. (3:23) Malibu — FCC: fuck. Piano ballad. Pleasant and light. Soaring synths. But only for safe harbor.
8. (3:14) You Shadow — Church-like organ. Splattering synths. Swing-y, with a nice bounce. A slightly throwback feeling. ***
9. (4:09) Hands — Ominous. Measured tempo. Fuzzy, growling synth base. Clashy synth treatments. Rueful vocals. Experimental. **
10. (4:01) Stay — Art-rock feeling, like a St. Vincent tune. Deliberate electronic drum beat. Organ and piano. High, edgy, slightly whiny vocals.
