The Very Last Day – Parker Millsap
Leave it to Parker Millsap to create a release that is a joy to listen to even while addressing existential topics such as a gay son coming out to his anti-gay father and the apocalypse. Even without its weighty topics, this disk, with its tight rockabilly band and his unique vocal styling would make for a solid release. Throw in clever song writing that mixes his Pentecostal upbringing and a dystopian view of things to come and you've got something well worth playing in this his second full length release.
RIYL: Dave Alvin, Lucinda Williams, Skin & Bones
FCC: None detected
#1) Hades Pleads - jump blues rocker with high energy fiddle about Hades letting loose with a nuclear Holocaust (2:36)
* #2) Pining - pretty, midtempo song about pining for one's love with great piano break (2:44)
* #3) Morning Blues - hypnotic, country blues number with exquisite fiddle/vocal interplay (3:40)
* #4) Heaven Sent - powerful number about a gay young man facing his preacher father (3:52)
* #5) The Very Last Day - funky number about nuclear annihilation (3:00)
#6) Hands Up - uptempo rocker about an ex-solider robbing someone to feed his family (2:41)
#7) Jealous Sun - slower, acoustic number featuring PM's vocals (2:38)
* #8) Wherever You Are -uptempo call for one's sweetheart in defiance of their conservative religion (3:02)
#9) You Gotta Move - strong cover of a Gary Davis / Fred McDowell classic (4:20)
#10) Acoustic number about reenergizing a relationship (4:25)
* #11) Beautiful lament about the loss of a sister with exquisite interplay between vocals & fiddle and guitar (2:55, too short)
