IYL: Mark Knopfler, Joni Mitchell, Burt Bacharach, Wynton Marsalis
My Favorite tracks: 1, 5, 8, 10
Paul Simon's 14th studio album gives a fresh take on some of his more obscure tunes. The album features new versions of deep cuts from throughout his solo career. The stellar band includes jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and guitarist Bill Frissell plus a chamber orchestra. Amazing that Paul's still got it at 77! Seriously, beautiful, awesome album.
1.***One Man's Ceiling is Another Man's Floor (4:01). Fresh take on an old favorite. Bluesy, bold, and sexy. Great piano riffs. Way better version than the original. From his 1973 album There Goes Rhymin’ Simon
2.Love (4:10). Medium tempo, beautiful vocals, sweet guitar. From the album, You're the One.
3.Can't Run But (3:29). Starts with staccato violin and flute. Slowly builds adding bass clarinet, and then piccolo, crescendoing into a chamber orchestra. From his 1990’s album The Rhythm of the Saints.
4.How the Heart Approaches What it Yearns (4:30). Slow, jazz feel featuring Wynton Marsalis on trumpet. Loungy bass and piano. Classical piano solos accompanied by soothing vocals. From the soundtrack to his flop 1980 movie One-Trick Pony.
5.*Pigs, Sheep, and Wolves (4:00). Snappy, upbeat. New Orleans jazz feel. Funny lyrics taking a dig at anti-racial profiling. Fun song! From his album, You’re the One.
6.Rene and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog
After the War (4:44). Slow, cello, clarinet, violin, post-war story-telling lyrics, bit of a sad feel but a pretty song. From his album Hearts and Bones.
7.The Teacher (3:45). Cool sax trills and solos. Unplugged version of the original from the You're the One album.
8.**Darlene Lorraine (7:13). Love ballad about romance, love, marriage, and how couples change and grow apart. Heartfelt lyrics. Medium tempo. Found myself humming along. From his album You're the One.
9.Some Folks' Lives Roll Easy (3:59). Slow piano ballad. Jazzy, sax solo, dreamy. From Still Crazy After All These Years.
10.*Questions for the Angels (4:01). Starts out slow with guitar solo, song about the homeless. Builds into stronger words and instrumentation. From his 2011 album So Beautiful or So What.
