Consistently great Portland dream-rock trio, played frequently on KZSU since the days when they were called Is/Is. This collects a few EPs of covers the band released on Valentine’s Days, and it matches the softer, more serene direction they’ve taken. Lots of sixties and seventies pop represented here, from psych-folk to teen heartthrob laments. Favorites: 1, 2, 5, 7, 10. No FCCs detected. 1. *(4:20)—Spacemen 3 cover. Slow, very similar in feel to the original. Definitely channels Jason Pierce and his starry-eyed, faded sensibility. Lots of phaser. 2. *(3:48)—Bobb Trimble cover. High woozy synths and guitars. Fried. Catchy chorus. 3. (4:09)—Barry McGuire cover. If you’ve seen the totally far-out sixties movie The President’s Analyst, where in the middle this hippie character sings a song with the dopiest lyrics in world history, this is that song. Slow, simple drum machine beat. Soupy guitars. 4. (3:51)—Irma Thomas cover. Deep, dubby beat. Buzzy synths. 5. *(3:44)—Moby Grape cover. Dark, almost goth, with a kinda krautrock groove. 6. (4:00)—Michaelangelo cover. Medium-slow, on-point take on sixties country-pop crossover. 7. *(3:37)—Karen Dalton cover. Slow, majestic, toward shoegaze or post-rock. Beach House fans will really like this. 8. (5:04)–Shoes cover. Mid-tempo, jangly. Keyboard with a slight wah sound. Low, half-spoken vocals. Brief breakdown. 9. (4:37)—Everly Brothers cover. Slow, pulsing bass. Feedback. Low harmonies. 10. *(4:28)—Mark Dinning cover. Slow, pretty, syrupy and swooning in that ~1960 teen torch song way. |
