ALT COUNTRY / AMERICANA / SINGER-SONGWRITER Jerry David DiCicca is formerly the front man of Columbus, Ohio-based Black Swans. Zookeeper shows 2 CDs and a fair amount of play. DiCicca now lives in Texas. The lineup here is DiCicca’s lead vocals, plus two guitarists, bass, drums, keys. Eve Searls provides nice backing vocals throughout and an excellent duet vocal on the title track, “Burning Daylight” (#5). RIYL John Prine, Steve Goodman, Steve Earle, Flying Burrito Brothers. No FCC issues 1 * Mid-tempo. Strong country-rock. Just getting by in a tough world. Good start. (3:21) 2 ** Slow. Gentle love song with twangy guitars. (3:24) 3 (FCC “shitty”) Slow. Talking/singing. Angry song about suburban sprawl. (4:30) 4 Slow. A bit depressing; a bit desperate. Just a little too plodding. (4:32) 5 *** Mid-fast. Suburb male-female country-rock duet. Highlight of the album. (3:31) 6 ** Mid-fast. Good toe-tapping drive. Lead & backing vocals are quite good. (3:43) 7 ** Mid-fast. Spirited with an anti-hate/prejudice message. (3:14) 8 Mid-fast. Not back, but vocals are sort of drowned out by the guitars this time. (3:38) 9 * Slow. Romantic and sweet. The slow dance that comes near the end of the set. (3:00) 10 Fast. Faux-hick, roudy and honky-tonking. Sorta silly. (2:39) 11 * (Mild language: “my ass”) Slow. A personal statement with some self reflection. (4:25) |
