Putting On Airs – Erin Rae (as told by Mr. Bones)
Like the disk’s cover, Putting On Airs is a simple, spare & beautiful reflection on life and the spaces
between people who may be physically close. Her introspective lyrics (she says “this album was
born out of a need to do some healing in my personal life") coupled with her mellifluous voice and
spare accompaniment make for interesting listening both for the sound and her reflections on the
human condition including homophobia, addiction and homelessness.
RIYL: Shannen Moser, Watson Twins, Joni Mitchell
*1 Grand Scheme – simple, dreamy nod to the cosmos & the meaning of it all with hypnotic pounding drums (slow, 2:46)
**2 Putting On Airs – great mix of slide guitar & piano (med, 4:41)
***3 Bad Mind – drop dead beautiful story of her coming out & homophobia in her family (med, 5:14)
**4 Can’t Cut Loose – superbly arranged story about cutting loose from addiction (slow, 3:13)
**5 Love Like Before – lovely story about the hard life of a troubadour with punchy bass, drum and slide accents (med, 3:28)
6 June Bug – slow & dreamy (3:40)
7 Mississippi Queen – (med, 2:48)
*8 Like The First Time – powerful fuzzed out guitars & driving bass (fast, 2:07)
9 The Real Thing – nice mix of electric & acoustic instruments (2:49)
10 Anchor Me Down – (slow, 3:35)
**11 Wild Blue Wind – gut wrenching story of a homeless friend with mental health issues with sublime instrumentation (med, 3:28)
12 Pretend – reflecting on a (male) admirer with whom she could not pretend. (slow, 2:27)
