Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2019-12-10
Re-boot of mid 80’s NYC post-post punk Man-woman psycho-sensual duo: beat heavy amalgams of irreverent noise rock and hip hop always maintaining a sly sense of humor. Probably the most important band you’ve never heard of, they were critically acclaimed, enjoyed college radio attention, and their track Drag Racing made John Peel’s list of all-time favorites. A scene in the recent Swans documentary covering the close relationship the band had with Sonic Youth in the early 80’s NYC postpunk noise scene shows Kim Gordon wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with BIG STICK while on a tour the three of them did together in Europe. This CD is a collection of new recordings of some old and new songs with the help of a who’s who musicians (e.g. B-52s’ Fred Scheider, My Life with the Thrill Kill Cult, et al.) After concentrating on other art projects throughout the 90’s, its so nice they are back.

Play: 14 in safe harbor, 4-5 together, 6, 9 all tracks short all tracks great FCCs: 13

1) (2:07) beat heavy fuzzy with their prototypical call/answer between his smarmy delivery and her coy sexy answering 2) (1:59) cool driving rockin beat feel 3) (1:15) super heavy crazed 4)* (1:09) upbeat fast almost galloping, halting, play with next 5)* (1:59)play with previous, girl vocals only, revisits their “drag strip” tune of yore, using the original samples 6)** (3:26) super sexy hip grinding slower groove, sexy girl voice, “mano in a mini-skirt”, makes a reference to “wearing my sonic youth shirt” which is ironic given what I said above 7)* (2:34) the original “Jesus was born on an indian reservation” beat returns, heavy bad ass 8) (3:13) dark toned lower with buried sampled sax barely bleeding through 9)* (3:02) (Fred Schneider guest vocs) basic dance beat and silly feel, “hot sauce” with some latin percussion and ‘isms 10) (2:59) sexy girl in bar dialog pick up silliness 11)* (2:39) drop tuned bass sexy hip grind, bajo sax seals the man-woman call response eroticism 12) (1:36) basic mid rockin feel, train theme 13) FCC 14)* best track but FCCs (3:27) just plain killer sexy beat with simple sax, catchy as hell with fem vocals “gimme that soulful groove” (play safe harbor FOR SURE) 15) (0:28) brief, kind of a spoof of soda commercial
