Nathaniel Rateliff, now without the Night Sweats, is still trying on different musical styles with nice results. Neither the folkie singer-songwriter nor the jump-blues shouter of prior efforts, here he’s a sort of easy swinging crooner. As always, the voice is the highlight. Instrumentation varies from just a guitar to a full string section.

FCC on track #7

* Mid-tempo. Breakup song with a snappy, swaying rhythm. Nice slide guitar. (3:34)
** Mid-tempo. Touching song about moving on after a friend’s death. Great writing. Nice organ and pedal steel add to the sweet sound. (3:55)
Slow and sad. Heavy bass; shimmering strings. (5:01)
Mid-slow. Spare: just voice and acoustic guitar. (3:54)
** Very slow. Tragic breakup reflections. Lovely strings & choral backup singers. (5:04)
* Mid-slow. Nice alternation of sad, spare verses & uplifting choral refrain. (4:12)
(FCC: ‘shit’ & ‘fuck you’) Mid-tempo. Pretty folk song despite the profanity. (3:30)
* Slow. An angry telling off after a bad breakup. (3:52)
** Slow. Just a sweet voice & acoustic guitar. Pretty and sad. (3:03)
Slow. Cathartic elegy for a lost friend. (6:08)
